Reno: The Biggest Little City In The World
It’s very important that you know the Weather Forecast for Reno. Luckily there are only two seasons!
Winter: Six months of bone-chilling cold, snow, five layer (clothing) dip and an unavoidable wish to die.
Summer: Six months of skull melting heat from that big shiny hurty thing in the sky, literally cooking eggs on the sidewalk, foxtails, ants and an unavoidable wish to die.
Hell, I’m not only a resident but a correspondent. Well used to be the latter.
The –redacted- Network had cretinous people that actually Paid Cash Money for text weather updates. This was the most boring and mind numbing facet of an otherwise kick-ass job. So, the asshats who couldn’t be bothered to look out the window in the morning would get a text advising that day’s weather.
Okay, for six months it’s fucking hot and sunny. For six months it’s fucking cold and/or snowing. Only had about 35 characters to work with so you can imagine the excitement of these mass texts. One day my mind went. On a July day sent out to thousands of subscribers ‘Hot. 90% Chance of Snow. High 135F. Low -65F’
Thank god my boss had a sense of humor. Seems a few people were actually confused and called in.
Second: Reno’s Economy
Third:Average People of Reno
Fourth: Modest Mouse
One of the best heart-wrenching videos ever was filmed here.
Tune in later for Part Two: So You Wanna Know about Las Vegas; that other city in Nevada
~Miss R
listening to: Bette Midler; Radio City Music Hall Live 2004
Sign me up, it sounds like the sort of place where people are eager to get out the corkscrew earlier rather than later in the day.

In my opinion it should be far removed from the state of Nevada..
Time Magazine listed their Top Ten Cities That Will Never Recover From The Recession (Depression dipshits). Reno and Las Vegas are both there. Two of the top ten in the same state. Say, what are housing costs down your way?

We are in the total opposite spectrum. Perth in Western Australia supplies 70% of the whole country’s wealth, thanks to a ridiculous mining boom. All the locals have to show for it is sky high prices, population overload, and rent that is 5000000% higher than it should be due to supply and demand.
People on mine sites earn between $200,000 to 450,0000 a year. These are the same people who 3 years ago were lucky to earn $40,000.

Doesn’t seem strange at all Loon.
In all truth the mines have the same -perhaps more- of Nevada’s state revenue (and lobbiests) than any other industry.
Mining was the original reason this area was established.
Thar’s gold in them thar hills!
Sadly we’re mined out here. You know, we’re out of our mines…

Reminds me of a joke.
A woman with a fur coat is being harassed by animal activists and one shouts at her “Do you know how many animals died to make that coat?”
She replies “Honey, do you know how many animals I had to screw to get it?”

Reno isn’t as bad as I portray it, thought a little sarcasm would help.

Hey, I live in a town with no civic identity, is a place to have a house rather a place to live, and could be dramatically improved if you could detonate a tactical nuke in the centre, so Reno sounds like a step up, mostly as I could get my snowboarding freak on. I’m weird like that, yanno, wanting to snowboard behind a car through the streets.
Just have to have the money, the lack of Homeland interest in me, and the woman willing to marry me to give me a green card, and I’ll be over

Well I am single! On the flip side i am also bereft of a little something people call ‘cash.’ the latter being the reason I still still in Reno heh.
As for the snowboarding we have some of the best ski resorts in the country only a 45 minute drive away at Lake Tahoe. That’s one of the reasons I moved here. Can get you started behind the car though -grin-

I would hope the fire is during the six months of winter. It’s too hot to burn a city during the summer.

It’s usually in October or September. Sill the end of summer. Not during the Donner Party months alas. I’d never burn a city when it’s hot out. Mmm I can’t even walk to the store for juice because it’s hot outside and I can’t be bothered.

Amazing .. of all the dead casinos in Reno, you show the one where I lost my virginity and smoked my first (and only) joint. Good times.
Don’t they say Reno is so close to HELL you can see Sparks? Hey, at least it’s not Oroville, the wart on the ass of California.

You’ve got to be kidding!! It’s been abandoned since I moved here 7 or 8 years ago. Cracking up on the local joke about Hell you put in there.
Never been to Oroville, and grew up in California.

It’s not all bad Don. There are loads of unregistered firearms, the University of Northern Nevada aka UNR. I and others of intelligence, fabulousness and travel (but certainly not the natives) refer to it as the University of Nearly Retarded.
Okay, the skiing DOES rock, and the Truckee River has great rafting, tubing and is only a 1/2 mile from my house.
Mind the hobos downtown!

Hey, I don’t know if you’re an active member or not, but the Mensa Annual Gathering is in Reno this year. http://www.ag2012.us.mensa.org//AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home14 (and for being a Mensan site, it’s ugly – they could have done so much better).

Michelle, my membership is active and dues are paid this year but I’m not active in the organization -the exception being any of the Regional events to benefit gifted students.
Hey, they could have held it in Cleveland, northern Florida or Dallas heh.
4th of July week I’ll be out in the desert for a pre Burning Man event viewing night-time interactive art installations, soaking in the hot spring, managing the camp’s bar and making music. What would you choose? 🙂
Thanks for the heads up though. You going?

What would I choose? Don’t be silly… No, I’m not going. I haven’t been to a Mensan function since…. 1995 back in Indpls. I’m an “active” member, meaning my dues are paid, too. But I don’t do anything else. Have fun on your desert trip!!!

One of my prime reasons for loving Reno was you could drive out from there to some great scenery, Silver City (one of my favorite places especially the graveyard). But I also liked gambling in Reno far more than Vegas.
Good to know I don’t have to fear the downfall of one of my favorite cowboy towns.
