Picasso’s Last Words

If you can whistle that tune 10 points,

If you’re at a loss then shame on you. Unless you’ve the misfortune to be born within the last fifteen years. In which case what are you doing here at YoYo-Dyne?
Piss off ‘ya little phuckers and write your note to your shaved Bieber.

Band On the Run was one of the first LP’s I purchased. The day it was released. Already had Abby Road, Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison, and at least twenty 45’s. This was 1973, Making me 3 years old at time. Okay, may have been 12.
Life already consisted of nothing but music and film. An obsession with silent movies and a physical yearning and love for making music.

Being overweight, an A student and incredible spaz helped more than you can imagine. Oh, I had a bicycle. I could ride for miles. And I did. To see movies.

It took me at least a year to separate the musical scores from the film/dialogue and actually watch the film. That is how intrinsically interwoven these arts are to me.

Those long-ago days I walked uphill both ways to school in the snow, wearing only barbed wire on my feet, as snowshoes had not yet been invented.
In Los Angeles,

Spent the weekends at movie theaters. Movie palaces. The days before 20-plexes.
One of the wonderful things about Long Beach was that it was 30 minutes from Hollywood; virtually every film from Hal Roach shorts to David O Selznick‘s Gone With The Wind were first screened in Long Beach.
Fantastical theaters done in Art Deco, California Moorish and Art Nouveau.
None still stand. If you travel to Hollywood the closest you can find is the Chinese Theater. No longer Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Even Grauman’s Egyptian is gone.

Patron cards filled out, producers and actors present. This was still the norm into my teens. In the 70’s. Nineteen not Eighteen.
Filled out lobby cards, saw so many Hollywood legends in the seats (if I were not such a film nerd wouldn’t have noticed) and sneak peeked lots of films. Many of which had their wings clipped when officially released.

Better yet there was a theater in LA that screened Only silent films. Learned to know and love Harold Lloyd, Clara Bow, Buster Keaton, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and Rudolph Valentino.

Well, as a teen I didn’t hang out at the mall, go to sleepovers, call girlfriends at all hours. Certainly not boyfriends. Well unless they were gay, but not admittedly in those days.
Do you know the reason God made little fat girls? So little gay boys would have friends -smile-.

You could find me at the movies, paying for a cheap Hammer film in silver dimes (from my coin collection), watching MASH at the cheap matinee, sneaking in (ha, easily passed for 17 at age 12 with the right glasses and make-up) to view Cabaret, Clint Eastwood, The Sting -where I developed my love of ragtime and stride piano playing and a fairly worthless professional career- Chinatown and so many other movies.

And that’s a little bit of history.
Have at least 100 45’s now but most of the LP’s are gone, replaced by MP3s and CDs. Still have some classics.
Turntables are available again. Silent movies are shown on TMC. It’s not all dust.

It’s three o’clock in the morning, I’m getting ready for bed.
You know I can’t drink any more.

  1. I was a TV junkie from the time I could turn the knob. I so want a test pattern t-shirt.
I lived a very long way from cinemas so TV it was. I snuck into the lounge room when my parents slumbered and I watched anything and everything. I loved Alfred Hitchcock presents, Laugh In, Ma and Pa Kettle and all the B&W movies.
My dad became a film director and so I went from sitting in front of TV to film sets.

  2. Oh Loon I did the same thing.woke up hours before my parents, Watched all the Three Stooges, Lone Ranger, and even farm report in the early hours. Hard to believe but in those days LA and surrounding areas still had farms lol. Nights were the same with B&W films.

Your dad was a director?! Please tell me which films I can find.
Was an extra in a lot of late 70’s and 80’s films but never was the ‘star’ I’d dreamed of being as a kid -grin-. Music turned out to be my forte.

Tell me more about your days on movie sets and your father’s films. How wonderful! The more I learn about you the more I am intrigued 🙂

    • oooh loved Laugh In and Alfred Hitchcock! Laugh In was on Saturday nights (I think) and at my age then didn’t get most of the jokes. Hitchcock was already at least 10 years old then -easily- but was shown in the evenings as re-runs. Was a Twilight Zone junkie and still am.
      Adore finding another screen geek.
Oh, considered naming my Wombies Rowan and Martin

  3. Love old movies, and the few now that will become classics.
Yeah, I like some crap too.

I’d have ridden my bike with you to see those flicks back then. Your non-gay guy friend!

But except for a few songs, I was never a big fan of Wings.

  4. Band on the run was the only Wings album I had but really loved the music. This is the 1st time I’ve heard any of their music in a long time. Every Saturday I would be at the movies in an old theatre in a small miing town on the west coast of Tasmania. What I really miss is that they would show a few old news reels then a few cartoons, usually looney tunes, then one movie then intermission then the main feature film. All that for only 15 cents. 20 cents to sit upstairs. Mum would give us 25 cents so if you sat down stairs you had an extra 5 cents to spend on snacks at intermission. That was a full afternoon’s entertainment. Now it costs you about 12 bucks & it’s all over in about 90 minutes

    • Wow. I remember the cartoons and trailers before the flicks. Newsreels weren’t being shown anymore.
Yeah if you’re lucky it’s 12.00 that’s just the ticket. Add a buttered popcorn (a MUST) and maybe a soda and you’re out about $20.00

Remember the re-releases of Gone with Wind, Snow White, Wizard of Oz , lots of classics every year. Intermissions on them all. In the gorgeous movie theaters. With ushers in uniforms.
No wonder we went into the artistic side of life heh

  5. Rachael,
I also liked “Wings Wild Life” but “Band on the Run” definitely shines brighter. I still have all my albums but no turntable. I just can’t get rid of them. My first? Santana Abraxas…

    • Red,
very cool. I have begun purchasing newer release on vinyl. Radiohead, Ben Folds, a few more. Not enough artists put out that great analog sound of vinyl anymore. Remember when you knew every scratch on your record and anticipated it?
Got a new turntable -since they became available again about 8 or 9 years ago, with a USB. Keep planning on converting the vinyl into MP3’s. If only I could figure out the damned software. think I paid about $125.00 for the turntable, maybe 3 years ago.
      Santana, yeah baby.

      • Rachael,
So funny you mention the scratches. Sometime when I hear a song I have on vinyl on the radio I’m a little disappointed the scratch or pop isn’t there. I think I’ll have to look into a turntable…

  6. It’s funny how many of my favorite movies also have soundtracks / scores that I love… it seems a very common thing that I fall in love with both simultaneously…
‘That is how intrinsically interwoven these arts are to me’ – I TOTALLY get that!

    • Bob, I knew that you would. You’ve no idea how many soundtracks I own. Love Randy Newman’s scores. Own everything from Avalon to Toy Story. by Mr. Newman. that man is a consummate piano player and master of orchestration.

  7. I didn’t know you were such a movie freak, I mean fan. In public school one teacher showed silent movies (on actual film reel) during lunch and I got to really like them. Keystone cops and Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy. On TV I’ve always loved to old B&W classics more than the new stuff. TV shows, too, with Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, & Alfred Hitchcock.

  9. I did not spend much time in theatres after we (my family, actually) tore down the Paramount. It was the one with the scrofAllwork ceilings, huge velvet drapes, a stage in front of the screen…you know, a real theatre. After that, I was more to live performances. It is how I saw Richard Burton do Camelot. *grins*

When I traipsed off to college, there was a little theatre like that next to a Fleur de Lis (even if they spelt it wrong) pizza. I went every afternoon to see the one movie they played before dinner hour: RoboCop. Saw it 43 times before the pizza joint burned and took out the screen.

For me, the soundtrack is a must. One of my fave movies is Nightmare Before Christmas. I had the soundtrack for a year before I ever saw the movie. I can think of about 8 soundtracks I have where I love the music even if I cannot tell you who was in the movie (which I happen to suck at anyway). xxx

    • red you are an evil force in the universe. Tearing down a palace?!

love live theater. did my time in community/city productions. If it were not for the giant SUCKING sound each time I was on stage may have stayed on the boards.Could have been worse. Our neighborhood theater changed over to a ‘porno’ when I was about 10. Mercifully they changed back to a ‘movie’ theater (sometimes an art theater: Saw The Man Who Fell to Earth there) by the time I was 14. Sadly not a palace.. Just a local LA bedroom community place. With about 27 apparent owners.
A neighborhood theater. They did have the ubiquitous stage and red curtain though.
Although after 5 years as a XXX place I wouldn’t want to be the guy at the ropes….

      • That was a new owner issue. They put in a gym. Fn country club mentality. Golf before sex. WTF? We took out the seats and stripped off the padding. Used those beautiful ash and birch seat on our piers to fish, in the waiting room at the office, etc. We did as much salvage of it as we could before the jackass in the Izod shirt asked when the bulldozers were going to get busy. Schmuck.

I have the voice of a harpy, so all I would ever have been is a chorus line girl, but I adore theatre. My acting has gotten better over the years, but I would never choose it as a profession. In fact, I suck at lying, which is a necessary skill to being a good actress.

Comedy, on the other hand…*wicked grins*

Off for the day, but promise to return. I have missed you on my vaca ❤ xxx
